CHINA’S ARTISTIC DÉBUT IN PALMA
We sponsor an outstanding exhibition of photography at the Casal Solleric.
More than 10,000 people visited the exhibition on this first day - including dignitaries such as Mrs.Wenqiu Liu, Chinese Cultural Attaché; Mrs.Francina Armengol, President of the Regional Government of the Balearics and Mr.Miquel Perelló, Palma Town Councillor responsible for culture.
"CHINA 8. WORKS IN PROGRESS"
"China 8, Photography in China 2015", forms part of the biggest exhibition of contemporary Chinese art on offer to visitors today. To give you an idea of its sheer magnitude, it is being presented simultaneously at nine museums in the Ruhr region in eight German cities. Now, for the first time, it is travelling outside Germany to Palma’s Casal Solleric as part of the city’s Art Night events.
These photographs of China today have mainly reached Mallorca on a singular journey from Essen’s Folkwang Museum, with the sponsorship of Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty, for whom "Art and cultural sponsorship have long played an important role in the company’s history and business philosophy. Our parent company and brand have, in particular, always been known for their commitment to art and culture”. This exhibition is also possible thanks to our good relations with the Fundación para el Arte y la Cultura (Foundation for Art & Culture) and, more especially, with our mentor Guillermo Dezcallar.
Mallorca is becoming increasingly important for China as an investment point and recommended top tourist destination. Spain is China’s best friend in the EU, as the Chinese Ambassador to Spain recently pointed out, and it is the Asian superpower’s leading tourist destination. Now China has made its artistic début in Mallorca, with an exhibition of photography that shows the complex reality and everyday life of this Asian country, with all its hopes and difficulties.
The opening was a hit success, in terms of visitor numbers and their response
A very special part of the exhibition was brought to the Casal Solleric for Palma’s Art Night, thanks to an agreement between the Fundació Palma Espai d’Art and Palma City Council and to the invaluable sponsorship of Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty. “CHINA 8. WORKS IN PROGRESS” will be on show to visitors at the Casal Solleric until early 2016.
A contemporary art exhibition with work by 18 artists
The exhibition offers a broad insight into this vast empire. “The works in CHINA 8 mark a before and an after in our perception and understanding of China today,” says the press release for CHINA 8. The exhibition is a very varied, provocative, critical one. In it, we can see everyday fights for survival, social inequality, the huge gulf between the city and the countryside, condemnation of environmental destruction and the abuse of power. At the same time, it shows the application of new technologies to Chinese society and how the Chinese communicate, together with a different vision of the reality of our bodies or individual sexualities and the speed at which this huge country has changed.
And if you are wondering why there is an “Eight” in the title of the exhibition, this is the number of German cities that took part in the original exhibition, plus eight is a lucky number for the Chinese. If we were purists, we would say that the exhibition should really be entitled China 9, since Palma is the ninth city to host the exhibition.
