Mallorca

Cluster of Sensations

Culture, gastronomy and natural beauty were the main components of the event organized by  Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty to present S’Estaca to the market.

“The location is unique: vineyards all around, the green freshness of which is only broken up now and then by  dark  locust  trees ; the house above, dominated by a terrace of  palm trees; towards the East, the natural sphinx of Na Foradada ; to the West, S’Aliga’s point; and to the North, unlimited sea views.

These are the words of an old fashioned romantic who looks at nature as the mirror of his soul; this is how Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria described the idyllic landscape of which he fell in love with as from the first day and the reason why he acquired so many “possessions” in Valldemosa and Deiá, with the captivating omnipresence of Na Foradada, and below the vigilating shadow of Miramar.

Looking out onto the main central terrace, towards the  breaking waves, between leaves of bushes and pine trees, you will see some small stone houses, hanging off the cliffs; meanwhile, below, the small boats lie on the incline as if they were just a about to plunge into the Mediterranean. The idea to build this little place, hidden between the abrupt cliffs of the North coast, came no less from the Archduke himself, in order to make life easier for the inhabitants of the area, who could then either go out fishing when the sea and weather allowed it, or cultivate the vineyards when they couldn’t sail.

Today, only one of those unique little houses belongs to S’Estaca property, well known due to Michael Douglas and his ex-wife Diandra Luker being the owners. Although, in this case, the star is the “finca”, exclusive listing of Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty.

The Douglas family has known how to keep the style of the architecture, both in the interior and the exterior. The description given by the Archduke himself of  how he directed the design in 1878, of Sicilian style with some North- African touches, has not varied too much, showing respect towards its appearance and country atmosphere.

The day started out cloudy, but cleared mid afternoon and the sky regained its characteristic blue, making the place and the moment a real display of shadow and light, all under the close watch of Na Foradada.

The property’s presentation started around eight o’clock in the evening, with the continuing arrival of the guests, high public figures of Mallorca’s national and international society, starting with Susie  and  Paul Kempe ( owner’s of Balearics Sotheby’s  International Realty), Alenka Topleck (Consulting Golf Co.), Jerry Begner (Director 9 EFG Banf London), Louise Huterstein, (Real Estate developer in Mallorca) Angelika & Max Bohrer ( Oficina Familiar DE), Manuel Santos (Private bank in Madrid), Joaquín Francisco Cotoner ( Banco Satander), Guillermo Deszcallar y Cristina Gómez (Illes Lex), Antonio Coll and Pilar Marqués (Banca March), Patricia Zapata (Real State) , Walter Smerling (Stiftung für Kunst und Kulture e.V.), Miguel Magnier (French Consul in Mallorca), Barbara Bergman and Klas Käll ( Rialto living Conecpt Store), Daniel Danés (DDS abogados), Álvaro Delgado (Notario), Francisco López Hinojosa ( Bufete Staubach), Nathalia Rigo ( Swedish Consul), Otto Cameselle Montis (Bufete Montis), Patricia and Jacob Asbaerk ( Danish Gallery Association, Chairwoman of Art Forum Berlin, Art Forum Berlin Advisor Board since 2001), Thomas Midzieslski von Kachel & Ehud Gat (Real Estate developer, Managing Director,  Project Development Managers), Joaquín Estevez Moncau (Banco Mediolanum). The event was exclusive to  British newspaper  Sunday Times, with the presence of journalist Emma Wells.

All the attendees were able to visit every little corner of the main house, as well as the other buildings, guided by Alejandra Vanoli, Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty Managing Director, who organized the event and also  chose the wise music selection for the evening, put on stage by  a Baroque  quartet playing Bach and Händel.

Personnel from S’Estaca’s kitchen were in charge of the food, managing to surprise the guests with natural taste produce freshly grown in the vegetable garden. Discreet but exquisite. And as many expected, everything accompanied by the awaited Douglas’s wine that is never missing when visitors are present. The party slowly waned with the night’s arrival, the last lights tinting the backdrop cliffs in red tones, the sea darkening and finally, the air  freshening , giving  away again  another  spectacular evening.

Jupiter and Venus, prior to the sun going down, and before the first stars appeared, were the night’s sky leading actors.

The future of “sa possesió”

The place, without a doubt, oozes history, passion and seduction; history for belonging to one of the last members of the Habsburg House and passion due to Catalina Homar, his “ moixa valldemosina” ( young lady from Valldemosa), but most of all, seduction, which this beautiful corner of the Sierra de Tramuntana with its Mediterranean essence, has managed to preserve, a territory between the sea and the mountains that roused the Archduke deeply.

Now, after so many years of being under the Douglas’ family responsibility, the “finca” has been put on the market with the prestigious Real Estate Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty.

Who will be the next owner? Who knows, although it will have to be somebody with a significant wealth to be able to afford the price requested. But above all, sensitivity for nature and culture will be necessary ingredients, something that no money can buy.

Whoever purchases S’Estaca, will have to treat her like a lover, attend and look after her with special intimacy, in the same way Archduke Luis Salvador did with his beloved Catalina Homar.
