This fantastic "possesió" - Pedruxella Gran - is in an idyllic setting on 600 acres, located in the heart of the Sierra de Tramuntana, a recently designated UNESCO reserve, just outside the seaside town of Pollensa.
The six bedroom main house features two courtyards, a Moorish tower and a spectacular pool next to a grotto. The estate includes a guest lodge with a great hall and two bedrooms, as well as a guest house with three further bedrooms. This amazing property is completed by: stables, fields with fruit trees and vegetables, an ancient aqueduct and a working olive press, all surrounded by 500 year old olive trees.
The oldest part of the main house is a Moorish tower, which dates from the XIII century. A nearby old Arabian arch is partly covered by a newer one with the date, 1810, chiseled into the mortar, reminding viewers that the house has huge amounts of historic value. The family that has owned the estate for forty years has undertaken significant refurbishment of the house, including upgrades in all systems, redoing the roofs, and adding heating and air conditioning. All the refurbishments were done with the best materials while maintaining history and feel of the house.
The central part of the house comprises six bedrooms and five bathrooms, plus a private library in the master suite. There are five bedrooms and two baths in their own apartments. The main kitchen is the hub of the house, full of light and including top-of-the-line appliances. The two separate apartments have their own kitchens. The house has a numerous fireplaces and wood burning stoves.
The house flows beautifully around two courtyards, one called the "patio de Señores" and another called "patio de trabajo," which includes the historic olive press and the brick bread baking ovens that are still in use today. A round pool with a shaded grotto is situated just behind the house. There is a stable nearby and, a bit further from the house, another barn with stables with capacity for five horses, and enclosures for goats and chickens. Orchards with fruit trees and a garden for growing seasonal vegetables border the estate. The estate has plenty of indoor and outdoor garage space.
Pedruxella Gran boasts more than 2,000 olive trees, most of them dating back 500 years. Surrounding the main house are cypresses, many varieties of fruit, and carob trees. The situation is idyllic - the estate is located high up, giving it a great feeling of privacy and protection. Its orientation makes it very sunny in the winter and cooler in the summer.
The estate has a long history of agricultural production, especially olives, and it produces an excellent commercial organic extra virgin olive oil. It has its own Tafona - possibly the last working press of its kind on the island. Each year a fiesta is held where they make olive oil in the traditional way. Using a stone mill turned by mule and an enormous oak press, under which baskets of olive mash are placed, oil is made from start to finish by fiesta participants.
A knowledgeable estate manager runs the daily operation of the estate and speaks English fluently. For the last few years, the family has hosted young scholars and volunteers who come from around the world to learn traditional methods in organic farming and olive oil production. The volunteers help support this wonderful farm throughout the year and during its olive harvest and oil production in the fall.
